Reading
Reading Comprehension & Textual Analysis
Students will be instructed to practice an in depth close reading of various short texts and articles. They will build skills on understanding and interpreting the text materials by decoding what they read, drawing connections with main ideas, and thinking from an analytical perspective.
Students will be introduced to a multitude of methods to conceptualize their ideas such as through the use of bubble maps, bullet points, verbal discussions, and research strategies. This is an essential step towards organizing the student’s ideas/points prior to writing any essay.
Iinstructors will review expected sentence and paragraph structure for both individual and multi-paragraph writing assignments. Students will practice sentence and paragraph building for standard paragraphs, specifically topic sentences, supporting sentences, providing evidence, and concluding sentences.
Students will be provided with a variety of topics where they practice stating their opinions clearly on the issue and convincing the audience to agree with their perspective.
Students will practice both fiction and nonfiction story writing from 1st person and 3rd person perspectives. All narratives will feature a beginning, middle, end, problem/solution, dialogue, main and supporting characters, setting, plot, and theme.
Students will write about a person, place, thing, event, or idea in a factually structured essay. They will learn to conduct research on the given topics and to teach/explain to readers through thorough explanations and extensive details.
Students currently enrolled in/or will enroll in Honors or AP English Language courses will be introduced to the 3 expected essay styles: synthesis essay, rhetorical analysis essay, and an argument essay. Students enrolled in/or will enroll in AP Literature will be introduced to the 3 expected essay styles: poetry analysis, prose analysis, and a literary argument.
For students who need assistance with filling out University college applications. Instructors will provide advice as well as walk through the steps/requirements for each application.
College Application – Personal Statement Writing and Review
Instructors will assist students with brainstorming/outlining techniques for the various personal statement questions and ensuring that students answer all elements of the specific essay question prior to submission.
